About the Event

At this climate cafe pop up style event we will hear about the issues surrounding the fast fashion industry and have a group discussion about what that means for women locally and globally. We will also explore more sustainable fashion choices and host a clothing swap.

Fast fashion is the term used to describe the fashion industry's business model of mass producing cheap, trendy clothes  and selling them quickly, with new 'drops' of up to 52 times a year. They are often promoted by influencers on social media, paid by fast fashion companies to encourage consumers to emulate them and buy cheap, low quality clothes to follow the most up to date trends and in some cases to never wear the same thing twice. As a result an estimated £140m worth of clothing is sent to landfill every year in the UK (WRAP). The production of these low quality clothes is also bad for the environment. Mostly made from plastic and derived from fossil fuels they have a large carbon footprint, use huge quantities of water and the production process produces high levels of pollutants. Garment workers, who are usually women, are exploited and paid very low wages to produce these clothes, often in bad conditions, both here in the UK and abroad.

Clothing swap Information:

If you want to participate in the clothing swap please take note of the following guidance:

  • Please bring a maximum of 3 items to the swap: clothes, shoes or accessories.
  • Please make sure the clothes are in the condition you would want to purchase them (clean, dry and in good condition only please).
  • Nothing with stains, holes or damage and no underwear or swimwear.
  • The more good quality items you can bring in the more successful the event will be!
  • Find something to take away, but please don't take more than you bring.
  • Any items left at the end will be donated for reuse.

This is a Gender Equality Perth X Climate Cafe pop up. All gender identities are welcome. We strive to make our events as accessible as possible; if you have any accessibility concerns please do get in touch and we will do our best to accommodate your needs.
